Alan Wylie’s canvases represent a diverse collection of subjects that are
bound together by an understanding of light and a palette resembling jewels
more than it does pigments. Whether it be a reclining nude or a sun-drenched
brook, the quality of light is so well created that a viewer can set a
watch by the time of day depicted.
Wylie is heir to a great tradition of Scottish Realists. Having been born
in Glasgow and educated at the Glasgow School of Art, he came to Canada
in 1967 and has since developed into an accomplished muralist and easel
painter.
His murals can be found in public and private institutions around North
America and Europe including the Vancouver International Airport; Glasgow
University, Lake Tahoe, California; West Seattle, Washington and Iqaluit,
Baffin Island. More recently he was commissioned to complete a mural featuring
Charlton Heston for the actor's home town of Magnolia, Arkansas.
Alan is a member of the American Watercolor Society and has received the
“High Winds Medal” from that association. For his watercolors he has also
received the Gold Medal from the Canadian & Australian International
Watercolor Exhibition in 1992. Most Recently he was the recipient of the
Gold Medal from the Federation of Canadian Artists Medal Exhibition in
1998.
He has exhibited across Canada and parts of the United States and is represented
in the collections of the Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts, the Lt. Governor
of Nova Scotia, Prudential Assurance Company, Hiram Walker & Sons,
Shell Oil Resources, the Lt. Governor of British Columbia and the Edmonton
Journal. |
