Artist Statement:

Many of these paintings reflect my interest in roles, relationships and our goals within the context  of day to day life.  Interpersonal communication and reflection are prevalent themes.  The images of trophies are particularly common in my recent paintings as reminders of our past or current aspirations and what we see as symbols of success in different cultural contexts.  Other work deals more directly with failure and regret.  I often use the human form,  depicted using contour line or silhouette so that they are anonymous.  This anonymity is meant to facilitate a sense of personal recognition and situational empathy in the viewer. Many of the paintings also include familiar images of objects such as bones, maps and boxes which are used symbolically.  Activities such as juggling balls or spinning plates denote the challenges of contemporary life. Trained as a painter, I am also engaged with the formal elements of painting.  These works are built of layers of colour and images within structured compositions. Images are visible on the surface or are partially visible fragments seen within the layers of colour below the surface. Usually under-painted in acrylic and collage material and completed in oil paint.
