PATRICK LANDSLEY

Patrick Landsley's recent landscapes are generally composed of abstract images of trees and birds on spatially flattened fields. The Southwestern Ontario setting is somewhat recognizable, but it is difficult to imagine that his arrangement is natural; from the formal architecture of his composition to the use of repeated and mirrored forms, each of Landsley's paintings offers multiple viewpoints and different ways of comprehending how images are made and perceived. Landsley also understands that the act of seeing is often compromised by a search for predictable, ableit pleasing results. By means of repetition and alternative viewpoints he inverts and subverts the predictable and thus facilitates the consciousness required to conjoin both peripheral and central methods of seeing. It is through painting that Landsley demonstrates and mediates the consitution of images and their movement towards significance.

For Landsley every painting is like an object lesson in what distinguishes art from mere representation. He is interested in connecting with those pictorial traditions where the struggle to create meaning from a painter's position is a constant and serious consideration about the materialist function and limits of art.
