Jaco Ishulutaq: Inuit Life and Legends

"Inuit Life and Legends" is an exhibition, organized by Gallery Phillip, of thirty sculptures by noted Inuit sculptor, Jaco Ishulutaq. Gallery Phillip's exhibition will enable Jaco to visit Toronto for the first time, providing him with the opportunity to compare big city living with life on Baffin Island, where he makes his home.

Jaco was born in 1951 in Pangnirtung, N.W.T. His mother, Elisapee, is a noted Pangnirtung sculptor, weaver and printmaker. Jaco's sister Rosie and brother, Lazalusie, are both well known carvers.

As a youth, Jaco was adopted by his grandparents, learning to carve from his grandfather. Jaco works in whalebone, ivory and soapstone. In addition, he is involved in Pangnirtung's acclaimed weaving industry.

Jaco takes great pride in being a sculptur. He believes that carving enables him to remember the traditions of his ancestors. He is contintually open to new ideas for his work and is committed to furthering his personal development.

Currently residing in Pangnirtung, Jaco and his wife have four children ranging in age from four to thirteen. He is a licensed outfitter and board member of the local hunters' and trappers' association.
